Summary of EDSI goals
- Using improved methods to help providers achieve greater efficiency and satisfaction with preventive care
- Find sustainable and scalable strategies for getting better results
- Build a cohort of champions and spread what works
- Increase understanding of what it will take to achieve and sustain better practice
- Develop several prototypes of community systems that achieve better population outcomes, using improvement science
Highlights of the project include the following:
- Clinicians: A series of Clinician Learning Collaboratives are helping primary care clinicians improve effectiveness and satisfaction with preventive care for young children. Participants are working to make anticipatory guidance and developmental care easier and faster, by putting developmental screening and preventive prompting systems into place with support from quality improvement coaches and leaders in the field.
- Early care and education (ECE) settings: A collaboration with ECE settings is helping a range of ECE programs (from school district early education centers and private preschools to private centers and family child care homes) make improvements in talking with parents about development, eliciting concerns, tailoring care to meet the unique needs of individual children, and helping parents find needed resources.
- Helping parents as consumers: A collaboration with local WIC programs provides an education session to parents throughout Los Angeles County. The session gives parents new skills in talking to doctors about their child's development, with the goal of increasing their expectations of and preparation for care.
- Population-based systems improvement: EDSI is working with partners in select communities to create a prototype of a well-functioning early childhood system. This begins a sustainable improvement effort that brings together all key parts of the early childhood system, with a commitment to improving outcomes by working toward a shared vision, adopting specific measurable goals, and putting a set of service delivery and policy strategies into place.
